How can you recognise nail fungus?

Typical signs of nail fungus may include:

  • yellowish, whitish or brownish discolouration
  • thickened or irregular nail plates
  • brittle or fragile nails
  • changes in nail texture
  • separation of the nail from the nail bed
  • spread to other fingernails or toenails

However, not every nail change is caused by a fungal infection. Before treatment, it should therefore be confirmed whether a fungal infection is actually present.

Diagnosis may be confirmed using microscopic examination, fungal culture or other appropriate diagnostic methods.

Nail fungus treatment with Candela Nd:YAG laser

At Era Esthetic Avenue Frankfurt, we use the GentleMax Pro laser systems by Candela Medical. These systems combine two different laser wavelengths: Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm.

For the treatment of nail fungus, the 1064 nm Nd:YAG technology is used.

The laser energy penetrates the nail plate and generates controlled heating in the treatment area. The aim is to create conditions that interfere with the growth of the fungi responsible for the infection and support the healthy regrowth of the nail.

The surrounding skin is specifically protected during treatment.

How does laser treatment for nail fungus work?

Before treatment, the affected nails are assessed and an individual treatment plan is determined.

Nail polish and artificial nails must be completely removed before treatment. Severely thickened nails may be appropriately prepared beforehand if necessary.

During the procedure, the Nd:YAG laser is applied systematically over the affected nail plates. This creates controlled heating, which may be felt as a noticeable sensation of warmth.

Treatment time depends on the number of affected nails and is generally short. No extended downtime is usually required.

How many treatments are required?

Nail fungus is often a persistent infection. For this reason, several treatments may be required.

Typically, 3–4 laser treatments are planned. More sessions may be necessary in cases of more extensive or long-standing nail fungus.

The exact number of treatments and the intervals between sessions are determined individually.

Because the already damaged part of the nail does not disappear immediately, the result becomes visible as a healthy nail grows out. Fingernails grow faster than toenails, while complete regrowth of a toenail can take many months.

Combination with other treatment methods

Depending on the individual findings, laser treatment can be combined with topical or systemic antifungal therapy.

The most appropriate treatment or combination depends on factors such as the number of affected nails, the extent of changes to the nail plate and how far the infection has spread.

The treatment plan is therefore determined individually.

What should you know before treatment?

Nail polish and artificial nails should be completely removed before laser treatment.

If tests for nail fungus have already been performed, the available results should be brought to the appointment.

Any existing antifungal treatment should not be discontinued or changed without professional advice.

What should you know after treatment?

Normal daily activities can generally be resumed immediately after treatment.

Consistent nail and foot hygiene is also important for long-term treatment success. Shoes and socks should be kept dry, and nail care instruments should not be shared with other people.

If additional topical or systemic antifungal therapy has been recommended, it should be continued according to the individual treatment plan.

FAQ

How is nail fungus diagnosed?

Not every discoloured or thickened nail is caused by nail fungus. Nail material or nail samples can be examined to confirm the diagnosis. Depending on the individual case, microscopic examination, fungal culture or other diagnostic methods may be used.

How many laser treatments are usually required for nail fungus?

Approximately 3–4 sessions are often planned. The actual number depends on the extent of the infection, the number of affected nails and the individual response to treatment.

Is laser treatment for nail fungus painful?

During treatment, heat is generated in the nail area and may be clearly noticeable. The intensity is adjusted individually.

When will I see the results?

Changes are not visible immediately after laser treatment. The affected part of the nail must grow out and be replaced by healthy nail growth. This process takes considerably longer for toenails than for fingernails and may take many months.

Can laser treatment be combined with antifungal medication?

Yes. Depending on the individual findings, laser treatment may be combined with topical or systemic antifungal medication. The appropriate treatment is determined individually.
