Botulinum toxin, known in everyday language as “Botox”, is one of the best-known active substances in aesthetic medicine. It smooths expression lines by relaxing overactive muscles for a few months. In this article, we explain what botulinum toxin is, how it works, what it is used for, how a treatment works, and what costs and risks to expect.
What is botulinum toxin?
Botulinum toxin is a protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Medicine uses botulinum toxin type A, in very small and precisely dosed amounts. In this form, the substance has been studied for decades and is approved for several uses.
“Botox” is actually the brand name of a single product. In everyday language, the word stands for all products containing botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine. The treatment therefore belongs in the hands of a doctor.
How does botulinum toxin work?
Muscles move because nerves send them a signal. Botulinum toxin blocks this signal at the junction between nerve and muscle. The treated muscle contracts less strongly.
Expression lines come from exactly these movements: frowning, drawing the eyebrows together, laughing. When the muscle relaxes, the skin above it lies smoother. The lines look softer. With the right dose, your facial expressions remain. They only become calmer.
The effect is temporary. The body breaks down the substance after a few months, and muscle activity returns.
What is botulinum toxin used for?
Aesthetic uses
In aesthetic medicine, botulinum toxin mainly treats dynamic wrinkles, meaning wrinkles caused by muscle movement:
- Forehead lines: the horizontal lines that appear when you raise your eyebrows.
- Frown line: the vertical line between the eyebrows.
- Crow’s feet: the fine lines at the outer corners of the eyes.
- Masseter: an overactive chewing muscle makes the face look wider and often leads to teeth grinding at night.
- Small add-on areas: lip flip, gummy smile, bunny lines on the nose or a slight brow lift.
Good to know: Not every wrinkle calls for Botox. The nasolabial fold between nose and mouth corner comes from volume loss, not from muscle movement. Here, a hyaluronic acid filler treatment helps.
Medical uses
Botulinum toxin is also used outside aesthetics:
- Excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis): botulinum toxin blocks the nerve signals to the sweat glands, for example in the underarms. The effect can last up to 12 months.
- Chronic migraine: injections can reduce how often attacks occur.
- Muscle cramps and spasticity: in certain neurological diseases.
- Overactive bladder: in urology, to relax the bladder muscle.
Migraine, spasticity and bladder conditions are treated by the relevant specialists.
How does a treatment work?
There is usually no downtime. You can return to your daily routine the same day. For the first few hours, do not massage the treated areas and avoid sport.
When does Botox start working, and how long does it last?
- After a few days: first effects become visible.
- After 10 to 14 days: most of the effect is there.
- After about 4 weeks: the final result is reached.
- After 4 to 8 months: the effect wears off. A refresh is possible.
How long the result lasts depends on your muscle activity, your metabolism and the area treated. Regular treatments can keep expression lines from becoming permanent.
Benefits of a botulinum toxin treatment
- Short treatment: 10 to 20 minutes.
- No surgery: no incisions, no anaesthesia.
- Well tolerated: the needles are very fine, and most patients only feel a short prick.
- No downtime: you can go back to your daily routine right away.
- Preventive: relaxed muscles can keep wrinkles from deepening.
Risks and side effects
Botulinum toxin is usually well tolerated. Small red marks or swelling at the injection points, small bruises and a mild headache in the first days are possible. In rare cases, an eyelid or eyebrow may droop for a while. These effects go away on their own.
With too high a dose or poorly placed injections, the face can look stiff or uneven. That is why experience and a precise analysis before the treatment matter so much.
A treatment is not suitable during pregnancy and breastfeeding, with certain neuromuscular diseases, or with acute inflammation in the treatment area. We check this during the consultation before every treatment.
How much does a Botox treatment cost?
At Era Esthetic Avenue in Frankfurt, the price depends on the number of areas treated:
| Treatment | Women | Men |
|---|---|---|
| 1 standard area | €149 | €169 |
| 2 standard areas | €269 | €299 |
| 3 standard areas | €369 | €399 |
Men usually need a higher dose because their muscles are stronger. Regular treatments can become expensive over time: if you have one area treated twice a year, you pay €298 per year. You will find all prices per area, including masseter, hyperhidrosis and Baby Botox, on our page on Botox cost in Frankfurt.
Botox or hyaluronic acid?
The two substances are often confused. Botulinum toxin relaxes muscles and smooths wrinkles caused by movement. Hyaluronic acid fills and suits wrinkles caused by volume loss, the lips and cheek volume. Many treatments combine both.
Is a botulinum toxin treatment worth it?
For expression lines on the forehead, the frown line and around the eyes, botulinum toxin is a safe and effective method when an experienced doctor performs it. The result looks natural, the treatment is short, and you can go straight back to your daily routine. The downside: the effect is temporary, and a lasting result needs regular refreshes.
At Era Esthetic Avenue, every treatment starts with a medical consultation. We check whether botulinum toxin is the right choice for you and explain the steps and the cost. Read more about the treatment on our page on Botox injections in Frankfurt.
